Big wave season opened up Tuesday at the infamous Jaws surf break off the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The world’s best big wave riders charged some of the best conditions seen at the spot, thanks to a powerful storm swell produced by Typhoon Nuri out of the Northern Pacific. Wind was uncommonly calm, and the west swell built stronger than most expected, bouy readings at 18 ft at 18 seconds as of November 11th, 2014.
XXL nominations for “Ride of the Year” Awards were up for grabs, as local and international surfers scored some of the rides of their lives, in addition their worst wipeouts in the 25-30 ft faces at Pe’ahi.
